Breaking Through the Barrier of Sensitive Diversity Topics at Work
Many of us have experienced a moment at work when we were either uncomfortable with a topic someone brought up or we’ve been told that we shouldn’t be talking about something we thought was okay. Oftentimes organizations explicitly ban certain topics, like race, religion, and politics. Why? To avoid conflict between employees and mitigate risk of discrimination or harassment lawsuits.
But for us to progress as a society, how can we move forward if we aren’t allowed to talk about the things that make us uncomfortable? We must learn how to have respectful and productive conversations without stifling individuality or making others (too) uncomfortable.
In this presentation, we will discuss:
- DIBE (Diversity Inclusion Belonging Equity) Terms and Concepts
- Overview of What Employees are Allowed to Discuss at Work
- The Impact of Prohibiting Sensitive Topics at Work
- Tools to Foster Safe and Productive Conversations
